As 2025 draws to a close, I find myself taking a quiet moment to reflect. It’s been a year of meaningful progress, creative problem-solving, and everyday wins that deserve recognition. While the challenges in healthcare remain real, I’ve seen just as many reasons to feel hopeful and proud of the work happening across the system.

I’ve watched doctors take important steps in their careers – gaining confidence, improving communication skills, leading education projects, and securing roles that align with their long-term goals. Even in highly competitive specialties like anaesthesia, I’ve seen candidates support each other, build on feedback, and grow into stronger, more self-assured professionals.

One of the biggest conversations this year centred on artificial intelligence. At one major conference, it seemed to dominate the agenda. While it’s important to stay informed, I couldn’t help but feel that more time could have been given to the topics that directly support doctors on the ground. And yet, the engagement, discussion and thoughtfulness shown by so many delegates was a positive in itself – reminding me how committed this community is to understanding new developments while staying anchored in what truly matters: people, patients, and practical solutions.

In the workplace, I’ve continued to hear stories of innovation, collaboration, and generosity. From developments in education and simulation training to revamped rostering systems and improved records management, clinicians are driving change from within. Teams are pulling together to find better ways of working because they care about each other and the outcomes they deliver.

What I’m consistently inspired by is your endurance, tenacity, and quiet resolve – not just in the face of pressure, but in your continued willingness to invest in your professional development, support your colleagues, and show up every day with purpose.

Personally, I was lucky to benefit from the care of a wonderful physiotherapy team this year. Their skill and kindness made a real difference to my recovery, and it reminded me just how valuable good communication across teams can be. When clinicians share insights and communicate clearly, patients feel it and outcomes improve.

I also want to highlight the leadership I see behind the scenes: doctors mentoring juniors, supporting team wellbeing, and modelling professional behaviour that lifts everyone up. These moments don’t always make headlines, but they shape the culture of healthcare more than most people realise.

So, as we head into 2026, I encourage you to pause and take stock:

Wherever you are on your journey, I hope you can take a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come and how you have contributed  – with thoughtfulness, integrity, and compassion.

I look forward to continuing to support you in your career.

Wishing you a restful and restorative end to the year.
