Growing your dream and your team
I recently expanded my team here at Standout Medical Careers after following the advice I give to my clients. I’m excited to have people onboard with their specific skills helping me grow the business to better serve you.
As some of you already know from experience, finding the right people with the right skillset isn’t a quick process. There are many variables to consider, including some non-negotiables when expanding your teams:
Start by evaluating your current situation and what skills you need. Are you looking for temporary resources for an upcoming project, or permanent staff to grow your team longer term? Planning for growth means thinking ahead and working with reliable partners who can help you achieve your goals.
Something else to consider is whether there’s an opportunity to upskill someone in your current team, especially where it aligns with their career plan.
If upskilling isn’t an option and your team doesn’t have the bandwidth to absorb the extra workload, then here are some things to consider finding the best candidates:
- What specific expertise do you need to add to achieve your department’s goals?
- Are there critical gaps in your team’s current skillset that need to be addressed?
- How can you best match the right people with the key tasks in your department?
Find the right provider who will support you, commit to helping you, and work with you on a plan and timeframes that fit in with your needs. When the provider takes the time to really understand you and your business, you’ll end up with better candidates.

Milestone – Standout Medical Careers is now incorporated
We’ve just reached a big milestone and set up a company structure – Standout Careers Pty Ltd. We will still be trading as Standout Medical Careers and in the near future opening up our services to non-medical people.
From a support perspective, nothing will change – you’ll still get the same personalised services.
My upcoming leave
I will be on leave in July.
During this time, I will be meeting with current clients on request via email.
I will resume bookings in August for coaching, workshops, and webinars. If you’re interested in any of these, please send an email and I’ll respond when I return from leave.
Are you planning any down time for the school holidays? Now that we’re six months into 2024, you don’t have to wait until year end to take a break. If you feel like you need to recharge now but can’t take a holiday, consider a long weekend. It can make all the difference to your mental health and energy levels.
If a holiday or long weekend isn’t possible, then an off-site retreat for 2-3 days may be an option. Getting away from your day-to-day environment will be good for both you and your team. No distractions, team-building activities, and time out to relax. These types of retreats are also great for creating your department’s 90-day plan.

Workshops, training and webinars
Career Development workshop
If you’re ready to accelerate your journey to career success, this workshop is for you. It’s a self-paced program that includes interactive sessions online.
This CPD-accredited workshop is available via the RACGP, ACRRM or Standout Medical Careers websites. It provides 13.5 hours CPD and is a practical and valuable workshop if you’re serious about your career development.

August face to face event in Sydney
We have organised a blended workshop on 17-18 August. It will be held at Cliftons Margaret Street (Sydney CBD) on Saturday with the Sunday program continuing online. This format will allow participants to undertake the course in person for coursework and networking as well as continuing from home or Sydney accommodation.

Communications training
Communications is a soft skill that can be learned. It’s especially critical for doctors when talking with patients and colleagues.
We’re excited to add a Communications Workshop to our list of services. I’ve created a new communications training workshop specifically for JMOs & IMGs.
The Experiential and interactive workshop involves a flipped classroom model of education delivery: 4 hours of online pre-learning followed by a 1-day group activity.
Attendees will walk away equipped with the skills and confidence needed to handle complex communication scenarios.
Communications training is one of many ways we can help you in your role, whether clinical or non-clinical.

I’ll be presenting to doctors at St. Vincents Hospital on Tuesday 2nd July on tips for a standout CV and key interview skills.
The annual Medical Women’s Society NSW careers night is being held online on Tuesday 2nd July from 7pm AEST. I’ll be presenting on CV writing and interview skills.

RACGP Women in General Practice Retreat
The RACGP SA Women in General Practice Committee is holding the 2024 Women in General Practice Retreat on 17th August. I look forward to presenting on career fulfillment in medicine and beyond and meeting attendees at the post retreat networking dinner.

Wine & Cheese evening – Save the date! (29th August)
I’ll be returning to Brisbane in August to co-host an exciting event with Vinny Lo from Oscar Hunt.
Please save the date for this event that Vinny Lo has kindly offered to host. The event is a wine and cheese evening at Oscar Hunt in Tenerife on Thursday 29th August.
I hope you can join Vinny and I. We’ll be there along with our medical contacts.[RK5] It’s a casual, fun and relaxing networking opportunity for some of Brisbane’s wonderful doctors. We’ll also share a few words about career planning and great clothes.
