Welcome to this month’s edition.
This month’s feature article, Know Your Competencies, focuses on an area that is often overlooked but highly influential in interviews and career progression: understanding what you are actually being assessed on.
Frameworks like CanMEDS and the competency models used across Australian colleges outline the key capabilities expected of you. However, many doctors haven’t taken the time to clearly map their experience to these competencies or recognise them within interview questions.
In this article, I walk you through why this matters, how competencies show up in interviews, and how developing awareness in this area can help you communicate clearly and build confidence in high-stakes situations.
I’m also delivering several CV & interview preparation webinars in the coming weeks. These sessions are practical, focused, and designed to help you structure your responses, communicate clearly, and perform at your best under pressure. I look forward to working with you there.
This month also marks 6 years of Standout Medical Careers. It’s been a privilege to work with so many doctors across different stages of their careers, supporting you to prepare for interviews, navigate transitions, and build confidence in how you communicate your experience.
Alongside this, I continue to work closely with doctors through my 6- and 12-month coaching programs. These programs are designed for those who want structured, ongoing support, whether you’re preparing for competitive training programs, stepping into leadership roles, or planning your next career move. Some clients have been able to access their professional development allowance to access these personalised coaching programs.
I also regularly collaborate with organisations and colleagues across the medical community, and I’ll be sharing an upcoming event this month that may be of interest to you.
Know your competencies
Understanding your specialty’s core competencies is essential for career progression. Frameworks like CanMEDS used by colleges such as Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) and Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) offer a clear guide.
Assess where you currently sit, and learn to recognise these competencies in interview questions so you can communicate clearly and respond with confidence.
In this article, we’ll look at why competencies matter, how they show up in interviews, and how you can start thinking about your own experience in a more structured way.
